Rabbit launched the R1 in January 2024 with a Teenage Engineering design and a 'Large Action Model' that promised to operate apps for you. Within weeks, reverse engineers showed the device ran a standard Android launcher and that the LAM was largely scripted Playwright automations. Most launch-day integrations (Uber, DoorDash, Spotify) broke or were quietly removed. The company has shipped firmware updates through 2025 but customer count, revenue, and the LAM roadmap have gone quiet.
Rewind shipped a Mac app in 2022 that recorded everything on screen and made it locally searchable, raising $10M from a16z. By late 2023 the team pivoted hard toward a wearable pendant and renamed the company Limitless AI in late 2023. The Rewind Mac app still works for existing users but the brand, website, and product roadmap have all moved to Limitless. New signups land on limitless.ai.
Arc launched in 2022 with a sidebar-tab layout and a cult following. The Browser Company raised $50M to build it, then announced in October 2024 that Arc was too complex for mainstream users and that all new development would shift to a new AI-first browser called Dia. Arc receives security patches only; no new features ship. Dia entered closed beta in 2025 and became the company's primary focus.
Humane launched the AI Pin in November 2023 with $230M+ in funding and pitches from ex-Apple founders. Reviewers panned battery life, latency, and a laser projector that wilted in sunlight. Sales never materialized, returns outpaced new orders, and in February 2025 HP acquired Humane's IP and team for roughly $116M while bricking existing Pins by month's end. The hardware is now a paperweight; the cloud services that powered it were shut off.
Olive was a healthcare RPA-and-AI company that hit a $4B valuation in 2021 after raising over $900M from General Catalyst, Tiger Global, and Vista. Customer hospitals reported the bots underdelivered and were difficult to maintain. After multiple layoff rounds in 2022 and 2023, Olive sold its two remaining business units to Waystar and Humata Health in October 2023 and shut down. The brand is gone; the website now serves a single sunset notice.
Babylon Health was a UK telehealth and AI symptom-checker company that went public via SPAC in 2021 at a $4.2B valuation. Its 'AI doctor' chatbot drew regulatory scrutiny from the UK MHRA over accuracy claims. After delisting from the NYSE and an attempted private rescue in 2023, the US subsidiary filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in August 2023 and the UK operation went into administration. The brand and apps are gone.
MosaicML built tools for training large language and diffusion models efficiently on commodity GPUs, releasing the MPT-7B and MPT-30B open-source models in 2023. Databricks acquired the company in July 2023 for roughly $1.3B, folding MosaicML's stack into the Databricks platform as the basis for what later became DBRX and the Mosaic AI training service. The standalone MosaicML brand was retired; the team and tech continue inside Databricks.
Casetext launched CoCounsel in March 2023, a GPT-4-powered legal assistant for case analysis, contract review, and deposition prep. The product gained traction with AmLaw 100 firms and Thomson Reuters announced a $650M cash acquisition in June 2023, closing in August. CoCounsel was rebranded as a Thomson Reuters product line and integrated with Westlaw. The standalone Casetext site is gone.
Multi (formerly Remotion) was a Mac video collaboration tool that let small teams co-edit screens with rich AI-assisted features. OpenAI announced the acquihire in June 2024, the entire team joined OpenAI to work on collaboration in ChatGPT, and the Multi product was shut down on July 24, 2024. The site now redirects to OpenAI.
Global Illumination was a small NYC studio founded by ex-Instagram and Facebook engineers that built creative tools and a Minecraft-style sandbox game called Biomes. OpenAI announced in August 2023 that it had acquired the company in its first-ever acquisition; the team joined OpenAI to work on core products including ChatGPT. The Biomes code is open-source but the company brand was retired.
Rockset was a real-time analytics database founded by ex-Facebook engineers behind RocksDB. It raised $100M+ from Sequoia, Greylock, and Icon, targeting low-latency vector and full-text search for production apps. OpenAI announced the acquisition in June 2024 to power retrieval inside its products. Rockset wound down customer service on September 30, 2024 and migrated technology and team into OpenAI's infrastructure org.
Codeium rebranded its AI IDE as Windsurf in late 2024 and grew into one of the most-used Cursor alternatives. Google announced an unusual $2.4B licensing deal in July 2025 that took CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and the core research team to DeepMind without buying the company. Two days later, Cognition (maker of Devin) acquired the remaining Windsurf product, IP, and employees for an undisclosed sum. Windsurf now operates as a Cognition brand.
Forefront launched in 2022 as a free playground for chatting with GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Claude, and image models in one interface. It briefly trended on Hacker News and Product Hunt and built a free-tier audience before paid alternatives like Poe and Perplexity captured the market. Forefront's chat app stopped accepting new signups in mid-2024 and the company pivoted toward enterprise data products. The original consumer site no longer functions.
Disco Diffusion was a free Google Colab notebook by Somnai that combined CLIP-guided diffusion with a community-tuned UI, going viral in early 2022 and seeding the prompt-engineering culture later cemented by Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. Active development on the official notebook effectively stopped in late 2022 once Stable Diffusion released and consumed the open-source diffusion community. The notebook still loads but is years out of date and runs poorly on modern Colab runtimes.
Artbreeder launched in 2018 as a GAN-based image remix tool where users mixed 'parent' images into new outputs. It grew a strong community of character designers and worldbuilders. The team shipped a 'Collager' and a diffusion-based 'Artbreeder Composer' in 2023, but the platform never matched Midjourney or Stable Diffusion on quality and traffic dropped sharply. The site still loads and the subscription remains for sale, but the changelog and social feeds have gone quiet.
Inflection AI launched Pi in May 2023 as a 'kind and supportive' chatbot built on its own Inflection-2.5 model, raising $1.3B at a $4B valuation. In March 2024 Microsoft hired CEO Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder Karen Simonyan, and most research staff in a $650M licensing deal that left Inflection a hollowed-out shell. Pi still loads and answers messages, but new models are not in active training and the company pivoted to enterprise AI services.
Suno launched in late 2023 as a text-to-song generator that creates full vocal tracks with melody, lyrics, and instrumentation from short prompts. It raised $125M at a $500M valuation in May 2024 and crossed 12M users by mid-2024. In June 2024 the RIAA sued Suno (and competitor Udio) for copyright infringement on behalf of Sony, Universal, and Warner. The product keeps shipping new versions and signups remain open while the litigation runs.
Udio launched in April 2024 from ex-DeepMind researchers and raised $10M from a16z, will.i.am, and Common. It generates studio-quality vocal tracks from text prompts and quickly became Suno's closest competitor. The RIAA sued Udio in June 2024 over alleged training on copyrighted recordings. Despite the litigation, Udio has continued shipping new models, including v1.5 with full-song generation and remixing.
Cognition unveiled Devin in March 2024 as 'the first AI software engineer', capable of taking a Linear ticket and shipping a pull request end-to-end. Independent reviewers (notably Carl Brown's analysis) showed the launch demo was carefully edited and that real-world success rates were modest. Cognition kept iterating and acquired Windsurf in July 2025 to give Devin a real IDE surface. The company's valuation reached $4B+ in 2025 funding rounds.
Harvey launched in 2022 with a GPT-4-based product for case research, drafting, and document review tailored to elite law firms. Allen & Overy and PwC became flagship customers. By mid-2025 Harvey had raised over $500M across Sequoia, Kleiner, GV, and OpenAI's Startup Fund at a $5B+ valuation and counted most of the AmLaw 100 as customers. The product, team, and roadmap continue to grow.
